Frequently Asked Questions
How can you train a dog in one day?
Training a dog to understand basic commands is easy if you do it in the right order with a method of communication that a dog naturally understands. A dog can usually learn a command by the end of the third repetition. The tough part is training the owner to deliver each command in a way that the dog understands. A large part of the training is teaching the owner how to speak "dog". If you are not satisfied with the change in your dog's behavior at the end of the session, you do not have to pay.
What do you train the dogs to do?
Your dog will learn five basic commands: Collection (Pay Attention), Sit, Down, Doorway behavior, and Recall. We will also address problem behaviors you have. We teach you how to take over as a the dog trainer to reinforce the changes and correct behaviors you don’t like.
How long does it take?
An average training sessions lasts about three hours but you should allow 4 hours in case you need the extra time.
Where do you do the training?
The training is done at your home. If for some reason you can’t do the training at your home or you are out of the service area Steve can meet you at Mitchell Park in Palo Alto. There are no travel fees to locations within the service area.
Do you train puppies? Steve generally likes to wait until dogs are 5-6 months old to do his 4-hour training. For younger dogs Steve offers a “puppy prep” appointment where he comes to your home and spends one hour going over the basics.
What kind of training collar do you use?
The training collar is called a Herm Sprenger Training Collar.
Why do you use them?

Where do I buy the leash and collar?
Most pet food stores sell the leashes and collars. You can also find them on dog.com. You may also purchase a leash and collar from Steve at your first training session. Refer to the Guarantee & Rates page for current prices.
What if the training doesn't work?
You do not have to pay for the session if you are not satisfied with the results.
What if I have problems with the dog after the training session?
A follow up visit is included in the training fee. **Steve will call at least twice to check on your dog's progress. Phone support is unlimited. You can call our home number any evening after 6:30 pm on 831-761-3459 if you have any questions at all.
**A Follow up visit is included in the One Day Training package anytime within the first 12 months after the training at no charge. A follow up visit covers any problems you are having with the basic behaviors that Steve covers in the original training. It also assumes that you have put in the 5 minutes Per day training that is required to make the training stick. A follow up visit does not include advanced dog behaviors and new problems that develop after the training. It also does not include returning to train family members or others that are involved in the dog’s care but could not participate in the original training. If you have done your part and are still having trouble with the basics, Steve will be there to help you. Follow up visits that are not included in the training package are billed at a minimum of $225.00 covering the first hour and $150.00 For every additional hour.
